Cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death globally and is unwitnessed in most cases. This begs the question: how can anyone know that an individual is experiencing cardiac arrest if no one is around to see it? MULT 603 has designed a cardiac arrest monitoring device that a person can wear on their wrist. This device detects the individual’s heartbeat; in the case that the person’s heartbeat drops below their normal individual threshold, their family, doctors, and friends along with emergency medical services will be notified of their location and condition. The hope is to drastically improve response times, put the minds of families in which a loved one has had past heart complications at ease, and eliminate unnecessary loss of life. The branding for this concept is named Cardian, a hybrid of “Cardiac” and “Guardian”. The mission of Cardian is to provide ease of mind and eliminate unnecessary loss of life by utilizing simple and easy to use technology and pairing it with powerful engineering and emergency medical services. The primary customer (the target market) is those age 65 plus with heart disease. The unmet need is a gap in telehealth services (NAICS 621999) for autonomous alerting of medical emergencies; in this project, the emergency of SOHCA. Over 85 million Americans have some form of heart disease, and the target market makes up of 40 million of this number. At one percent market capture and the current price point of 150,annualrevenuepotentialis150, annual revenue potential is 60,000,000.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/capstone/1146/thumbnail.jp

Alternative fuels for the internal combustion engines are introduced as an improved fuel over mainstream conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is the most successful and widely used alternative fuels that helps mitigate emission problem caused by vehicles. Mainstream fuelled vehicles are fitted with a conversion kit to enable the operation with CNG, these converted vehicles are called Natural Gas Vehicles. A bi-fuel engine test rig was fabricated using a 1500cc 12 Valve engine fitted with a Landi Renzo conversion kit enabling operations on petrol and natural gas. This test rig was used to conduct experiments to obtain the fuel consumption and the corresponding exhaust emission quality. The results obtained were compared with the actual data of NGV taxi fitted with Tartarini conversion kit for validation purpose. The findings from this experimental rig are used as a comparison between the use of petrol and natural gas as fuel for vehicles. The results clearly prove that the use of natural gas provides improved exhaust emission at lower cos

Femtocell is a low power base station, wireless access point designed especially for homes and small organizations. It is promising technology for operators to improve their capacity and for users to give indoor coverage. As mobile users are increasing day by day so the legacy system is unable to provide such a high data rates to all these users. In this case femtocells play a key role to offload the data traffic from macro base station. The implementation of femtocell has posed so many challenges like interference, localization, access control and mobility management. The aim of this paper is to present an enhanced algorithm for handover in Hand-In scenario. In already existing algorithms handover is decided on the basis of a single parameter but here we have simulated an algorithm that considers multiple parameters instead of a single parameter for handover. Through this algorithm, the most suitable femtocell will be selected for handover, hence number of handovers will be decreased. Simulation results show that the system performance has been improved.

Introduction: Insulin resistance is defined as reduction of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in skeletal muscles and inadequate suppression of the production of endogenous glucose. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of vitamin D intake on insulin resistance in aged patients. Materials and methods: This interventional study was carried out on residents of Sadeghieh Nursing Home in Iran. The participants were healthy adults aged ≥ 65. For eight weeks, the participants took pills containing 50,000 IU vitamin D3 per week. Insulin resistance was defined as homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) > 2.5. We used McNemar’s test, Wilcoxon test, chi-square, and Pearson correlation coefficient and SPSS software (v. 12) to analyse the collected data. Results: The average age of the 76 participants was 78.7 ± 8 years and 52 of the participants were female. Before and after the study, 37 and four participants had vitamin D deficiency, respectively (p < 0.001). Impaired fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and insulin resistance was not more prevalent in the participants with vitamin D deficiency. In this study, vitamin D intake had no significant effect on FPG level (p = 0.9), but it increased the prevalence of insulin resistance significantly (p < 0.001). Conclusions: In our study, before and after the intervention, vitamin D deficiency had no relationship with FPG level and insulin resistance. Vitamin D intake had no significant effect on FPG level, but it increased the prevalence of insulin resistance significantly. We believe that performing more studies, with a longer timespan and larger sample size, as double-blind clinical trials, is necessary. Materiał i metody: To kliniczne badanie eksperymentalne przeprowadzono u osób przebywających w placówce opiekuńczo-leczniczej Sadeghieh Nursing Home w Iranie. Uczestnicy byli zdrowymi osobami dorosłymi w wieku ≥ 65 lat. Przez 8 tygodni podawano im witaminę D3 w kapsułkach w dawce 50 000 jm./tydzień. Insulinooporność definiowano jako wskaźnik HOMA-IR > 2,5. W ramach analizy statystycznej danych przeprowadzono testy McNemara, Wilcoxona, χ2 i określono współczynnik korelacji Pearsona, używając programu SPSS (wersja 12). Wyniki: Średni wiek 76 uczestników badania (52 kobiety) wynosił 78,7 ± 8 lat. Niedobór witaminy D przed badaniem stwierdzono u 37 osób, a w trakcie badania — u 4 osób (p < 0,001).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Celery (Apium graveolens), in traditional medicine is known as appetite and libido stimulant, and also there has been referred to its effect on miscarriage and catamenia. This plant with known plant compounds could be an option for fertility control. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of celery on male rats in fertility control and sex ratio of rat offspring. METHODS: In this experimental study, 20 male rats were divided randomly into 4 groups, 5 in each group. Control group received no treatment; Sham group received 1 ml normal saline and the treatment groups 1 and 2 received hydro-alcoholic extract of celery in doses of 100 and 200 mg/Kg/BW respectively for 5 weeks. After mating each male rat with two female rats, the number of delivered mice and the number of offspring and their sex were recorded and compared 30 days after the birth. FINDINGS: There was no significance difference between the experimental and control group (p>0.05). The result showed a significant decrease in the number of offspring in doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg (4.25±0.25 and 4.50±0.32 respectively) compared to the control group (7.11±0.26), also a significant increase in the sex ratio in dose of 100 mg/kg (2.93±0.30) compared to the control group (0.98±0.11) was observed (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: It seems that consumption of celery in male decreases the number of offspring and increases the male genesis; because it does not affect on childbirth. It may be useful safely in pregnancy controlling. © 2014, Babol University of Medical Sciences. All rights reserved

Petri Net modelling approach for analysing the behaviour of Wnt/[inline-formula removed] -catenin and Wnt/Ca 2+ signalling pathways in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is an inherited heart muscle disease that may result in arrhythmia, heart failure and sudden death. The hallmark pathological findings are progressive myocyte loss and fibro fatty replacement, with a predilection for the right ventricle. This study focuses on the adipose tissue formation in cardiomyocyte by considering the signal transduction pathways including Wnt/[inline-formula removed]-catenin and Wnt/Ca2+ regulation system. These pathways are modelled and analysed using stochastic petri nets (SPN) in order to increase our comprehension of ARVC and in turn its treatment regimen. The Wnt/[inline-formula removed]-catenin model predicts that the dysregulation or absence of Wnt signalling, inhibition of dishevelled and elevation of glycogen synthase kinase 3 along with casein kinase I are key cytotoxic events resulting in apoptosis. Moreover, the Wnt/Ca2+ SPN model demonstrates that the Bcl2 gene inhibited by c-Jun N-terminal kinase protein in the event of endoplasmic reticulum stress due to action potential and increased amount of intracellular Ca2+ which recovers the Ca2+homeostasis by phospholipase C, this event positively regulates the Bcl2 to suppress the mitochondrial apoptosis which causes ARVC

Objectives: Infertility is one of the most common health problems in the world. Different plants are used in traditional medicine to treat infertility. Celery is rich in flavonoids and vitamins E and C. The present study investigated the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of celery leaves on the delivery rate, number, weight and sex ratio of rat offspring. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 45 Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of fifteen (five male and 10 female rats per group). The control group received 1 ml of distilled water, and experimental groups received respectively doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/BW celery extract for five weeks by gavage. During the fifth week each male rat was mated with two female rats from the same group in a separate cage. After a week, every female rat was kept in the separate cages. Females received celery extract during pregnancy and until childbirth. Finally, the number of the delivery females, number, weight and sex ratio of offspring were recorded. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA test using SPSS15 software. Results: The number of the delivery rats in the experimental groups was not significantly different than the control group (P>0.05). The number of newborns was significantly increased in each experimental group compared to the control group (P0.05). Conclusions: Celery improved fertility due to have flavonoid and antioxidant activity, and its consumption in both sexes can be useful in the treatment of infertility. © 2014 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved
